CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents the discussion about:
background of the study, statement of the problem, objective of the study,
hypothesis of the study, significance of the study, scope and limitation, and
definition of key terms
1.1 Background of Study
The success
of the
students in following the
teaching
and learning activities in schools
determined
their
ability to read.
As we
know that most of the
knowledge
presented
in the
form of written language
that
requires
children to do
reading activities
in order
to acquire knowledge. Therefore,
learning
to read has a
very
strategic
position
in
education and
teaching.
The
ability to read can’t be
obtained
naturally,
but
through a
learning process which
in part
is the
responsibility of the teacher.
Thus,
teachers
are required to
be able
to assist students in developing
the
ability to read.
A lot of
information
can be
extracted from
the
reading. People who
read a
lot will gain
a
greater
knowledge than those
who
rarely
or never
read.
Through
knowledge,
people can communicate
back
information
held in the form of
oral or
written. So in other words,
reading
can
also help
a person
to improve their communication skills
in other
forms. Moreover,
in a
society like
today's
modern
technology, one must
read a
lot in order to
follow
the development and
advancement
of
technology because of the difficulty
in
reading is
a serious
flaw
in the
life (Rubin in
Slamet
2003:
74).
Thus,
the
ability to read a very important, so that helping
children
to learn
various
things.
Reading
comprehension is not only on the pronouncing of loud reading, but also on the
understanding reading taken in consideration. As said by Christine Nuttall. (2005:3)
Nila B. Smith and
Alan Robinson, Reading comprehension means the understanding, evaluating, and
utilizing of information and ideas gained through an interaction between reader
and author. (1963:205)
Reading
comprehension is processing written language to get ideas, relating ideas to
the experience, organizing ideas evaluating ideas, and utilizing ideas. Reading
comprehension means the understanding, evaluating, and utilizing of information
and ideas gained through an interaction between reader and author (Betty D.
Roe, Barbara D. Stoodt, and Paul C. Burns. 1978:145)
Textbooks
are
tools
students
to understand and
learn
from
the
things that are read
and
to
understand
the world (outside of him). Textbooks
have
a
tremendous power
to change
students'
brains. Textbooks
can
affect children's knowledge
and
specific
values. Chambliss
and
Calfee
(1998)
explain
it in more detail. Muslich Masnur. 2008. Hakikat

Meanwhile,
the
Directorate General
of
Secondary Education (2004:
3) states
that
a
textbook or set of
textbooks
is
made
systematically
writing
contains
about
a
particular
subject
matter, which is
prepared
by the author using
the
applicable reference
curriculum.
The
substance contained in
the book
is
derived from the
competencies
that must
be mastered by
the
reader (in this case students).

Center
of Books
(2006:
1)
concluded
that the
textbooks
are
books
that hold on
the
students at
a
particular level
as a
medium of
learning (instructional), related to the
particular
field of study. Textbooks
are
standard
books
compiled
by experts in the field,
equipped
with the usual means of learning
(such
as tape),
and will
use as supporting
learning
program.
Regulation of the Minister of National Education No. 11 of 2005 explained that the textbooks (textbooks) are mandatory reference book for use in schools which contain learning materials in order to increase faith and piety, character and personality, the ability to master science and technology, the sensitivity and the ability aesthetic, physical and health potential which is based on national education standards. In the
English-Indonesian
dictionary
written
by Echols and
Shadily
(1977:
207),
the
effectiveness comes from the word
"Effective",
which
means "Successful"
or
"adhered
to". Meanwhile,
according to Emerson
(in
Handayaningrat,
1996:
16),
argues
that the
effectiveness (effectiveness) is:
"is
measuring
in
terms
of
Attaining
prescribed
goals or
objectives".
Effectiveness
is a
measure in the sense of
achievement
of goals or objectives that have been
defined
previously.
